There’s nothing quite like new love—and in the suburbs of Spokane, Washington a new coffee bar is celebrating that feeling as “sappy romantics”. This spot is another impressive addition to the growing Spokane coffee scene, somewhere we’re always excited to hear more from. Let’s take a closer look: this is New Love Coffee in Liberty Lake, Washington.

As told to Sprudge by Ike Bubna.

Introduce yourself to our readers—tell us about your cafe!

New Love Coffee opened on Valentine’s Day 2022; yes that was totally intentional cause we’re sappy romantics at heart! We have a wonderful space with a large quiet loft area as well. Making it an ideal place to study, connect with an old friend, or even have a hot first date. We’ve got delicious coffee drinks, pastries from a local bakery, and savory hand pies from Bean & Pie in Coeur d’Alene. Our baristas are just about the nicest people around, knowledgeable about coffee, and are ready to guide you through the disappointment that we don’t have white chocolate or straws. We don’t have a phone or app to order drinks from intentionally so that we can focus on the in-person connection that makes supporting your local coffee company so special.

What equipment do you use in your shop?

We have a killer custom white 15kg Proaster coffee roaster sourced through First Crack; those guys are so supportive and friendly! To make coffee we have everything from AeroPresses, a FETCO for drip, a two-group La Marzocco Strada ABR, Nuova Simonelli espresso grinders, and the EK43 from Mahlkönig. Our water spigot though is a pretty standard and generic brand… we’ll work on an upgrade later.

Which roaster or roasters do you serve?

New Love Coffee is what we serve; all roasted in house! So far we’ve sourced most of our green coffee from the incredible Shared Source (shoutout to Michelle with some of the best customer service around) and we purchase some green from Coffee Shrub when they have an irresistible coffee available. We’re literally too busy to make blends so just represent the people who grow the coffee by putting their name on our bags. So far no complaints, but nervous about our upcoming lack of a catchy holiday blend name. Here’s hoping our unique Holiday labels designed by a talented local woman artist named Makayla Sotin keeps the holiday shoppers happy!

What is the neighborhood like where you’re located? What’s some other cool stuff nearby?

The neighborhood is barely here! We are in one of the first buildings in the commercial district of the River District in Liberty Lake. So not a lot around us besides nature and the Spokane river. Cool stuff nearby, well I saw a Bald Eagle flying up the river earlier this week, so that was cool. Eventually everything will be built out and it will feel like a downtown for Liberty Lake right along the Spokane River with access to the Centennial Trail. We’re really happy to be a part of it and those who live close by have really shown up to support us and create the beginnings of a wonderful third place.

What’s something cool or unique about your cafe you want folks to know?

We have these cool knit cacti by local artist eMknits. And one of our baristas made doggie bandanas with our logo on them. Ned, this super chill French bulldog whose a regular, looks absolutely fabulous in them!

Is there a community organization or charity you’d like to shout-out as part of this feature?

Street Bean in Seattle! I was Director there years ago and it was one of the most formative experiences of my life. It shaped how I approach leadership, training, and my belief in everyone’s potential to learn and grow. It also helped me to learn how to hold with humility, humor, and openness a focus on all the things that make coffee shops and the diverse communities around them special. If I can ever help to build something similar to Street Bean in the Spokane/Liberty Lake area I would be over joyed.

Thank you!
